There is an interesting story to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just across the border from nearby Thailand, where gambling hall gambling is banned. Eight casinos are anchored in a relatively tiny space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect area, a three to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest betting centers in Asia. The initial Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored barge gambling hall, contains 150 slot machines and sixty tables. The Naga casino is open all hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, four tables of blackjack, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown before long followed. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive vacation and hotel compound that highlights a number of comforts aside from the gambling den, which houses ten thousand square feet of 130 one armed bandits and eighty eight table games.
